Tosin Paul Ajayi
Nigeria
Growing up in Akure, Ondo State, Tosin Paul Ajayi was struck by the different dynamics of life, from the social issues that kept emerging such as marginalisation and gender inequality to the ideals he formed about love and history.
Art then became a way to express his thoughts and ideologies and to educate and represent these ideals using acrylic paint, fascinated by beauty when using rectilinear and curvilinear forms to express.
The distortion and dissection of anatomical structures into formal and informal elements in his paintings, are determined by the theme of the particular series of work he is working on, married with appropriation, text and shared experience of my muse related to the theme of the particular work. In doing this you are trying to express your intuition from someone else's point of view.
His work oscillates between two extremes that can be cautiously defined as abstract stylisation and quasi naturalism. His paintings are influenced by 16th century African sculptural pieces and early 19th century cubists as far as Pablo Picasso is concerned.
Tosin obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Benin where she specialized in painting in the year 2019 - 2021.
