"Ategwa’s work vibrantly captures the rhythm of urban life in Cameroon. Using bold lines and intense colors, he transforms everyday street scenes into dynamic compositions filled with movement and energy. Blending pop art influences with local visual traditions, Ategwa celebrates the dignity and vitality of ordinary people, reflecting the colorful pulse of Douala’s streets and markets."

Ajarb Bernard Ategwa

Ategwa is a Cameroonian artist based in Douala whose work draws inspiration from local photo studios and everyday urban life. His portraits combine references to post-independence African black-and-white photography with modern influences from social media. While his bold, graphic style reflects advertising aesthetics familiar in Douala, he also introduces softer watercolor elements that create visual tension. His large-scale paintings depict the vibrant, chaotic rhythm of the city — from taxi stands to markets and bars — capturing moments of daily life. Born in 1988 in Kumba, Ategwa has exhibited internationally, with works in major collections such as the Chazen Museum of Art and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
