Donut(s) is an act of critical irony. The light, almost playful title stands in direct conflict with the depth of the portrait — and that discomfort is the very heart of the work.

The lip plate worn by the figure, sacred to the Mursi and Suri peoples, is here labelled with the name of a Western confection. This is what the colonial gaze so often does: it turns symbols into jokes, wisdom into fetish, tradition into fashion.

This painting is not a tribute — it is an indictment.
An indictment of cultural digestion, of the exotification of difference, and of erasure through mockery.

The body depicted is not a donut. Yet perhaps the viewer needs that jolt to understand that the sacred is not meant to be consumed.
