This painting depicts a member of the Karo tribe from southern Ethiopia, renowned for their intricate body paintings used in rituals and celebrations. The figure, with a face marked by white patterns, gazes directly at the viewer, confronting the stereotypes bound to the notions of “primitive” or “exotic.”

The title plays on a double meaning: Karo is the tribe’s name, but in Portuguese it sounds like caro (“precious” or “expensive”), questioning the symbolic and economic value the contemporary world assigns to cultures that, for so long, were devalued or ignored.

The work invites reflection on how the West views tradition: what was once dismissed as backward is now often transformed into an object of fetish, collection, or market.

KARO is not a romanticised portrait — it is an affirmation.
It is a presence that resists, that has not been converted, that continues to assert its identity beyond imposed standards.
