About The Artwork

In the work of Josué Dombele, history takes on new contours. The colonial past - so often told through the lens of violence and submission - is here challenged by images of power, dignity, and reverence. Black figures emerge as protagonists: they sit on thrones, play the chess game of the world, march with spears in hand, eyes lifted, bodies alive.
With vivid colors and a symbolic language marked by maps and theatrical gestures, Dombele rewrites the visual imaginary of history. His painting is a claim: to memory, to justice, to the centrality of Africa in the global narrative. Each scene is a small aesthetic revolution, where the sacred merges with the political and the everyday rises into the mythical.
