René Tavares

ABOUT THE ARTIST

René Tavares

René Tavares (b. 1983, São Tomé and Príncipe) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice navigates identity, memory, and postcolonial legacies. Trained in France and Senegal, he merges photography, painting, and drawing to create layered works that blur archival references with expressive intervention.

Often reworking colonial-era portraits, Tavares overlays them with bold strokes, textures, and symbolic codes — gestures that question fixed narratives and reclaim African presence. His work inhabits a space between history and reinvention, where identity is not static but constantly reimagined through movement, mark-making, and visual resistance.
