About The Artwork

The mining industry reveals a stark contrast between the pursuit of precious resources and the neglect of human dignity. Workers operate in hazardous conditions, often without protection, facing daily risks for minimal reward.

In the shadows of the mines, these individuals remain largely invisible - the forgotten backbone of an industry that sustains modern technology while concealing its human toll. Each strike of the pickaxe becomes a quiet cry, echoing through systems built on imbalance.

This work reflects on that silence. It seeks to honour resilience while questioning a future shaped by extraction, urging a collective reconsideration of how value is measured - and at what cost.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marc Makalu

Marc Makalu Ndombasi is a visual artist from Kinshasa, DR Congo, where he lives and works. Inspired by comic books from a young age, his passion for art led him to study at the Institut des Beaux-Arts and the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Kinshasa, specializing in painting.

His work blends realism with quiet introspection, portraying intimate yet universal moments. With a refined technique and muted palette, Marc explores themes like memory, presence, and social injustice - including child labor, resource exploitation, and silenced voices across Africa.

Through subtle gestures and symbolic detail, his paintings reflect the emotional and political layers of everyday life.
