Amadeo Carvalho

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Amadeo Carvalho

Amadeo Carvalho (b. 1985, São Vicente, Cape Verde) is an artist whose practice emerges from the urgency to express identity, memory, and resistance. Moving fluidly between drawing, music, and the migrant experience, his work developed as a deeply autobiographical and political gesture — where painting, marked by raw color, bold figuration, and text, becomes a space of voice.

Inspired by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Pablo Picasso, and René Tavares, Amadeo has cultivated a unique visual language rooted in the African diaspora and his personal journey between Cape Verde, Portugal, and the UK. His paintings often blend portraiture with words and instinctive gestures, evoking both personal and collective histories.

He currently balances his painting practice with his role as Creative Director of Noboh Kulture, a brand that uses fashion as a medium for cultural memory. Amadeo has been steadily building a strong presence in the contemporary art scene, with exhibitions in Lisbon, Cape Verde, and the São Tomé Biennale (2024).
