Don Sebas Cassule

Sebastião Joaquim N'debela Cassule (b. 1968, Camabatela-Ambaca, Angola) is a celebrated Angolan contemporary artist, known for his powerful visual narratives rooted in memory, transcultural identity, and spiritual symbolism. A longstanding member of UNAP and the International Association of Plastic Arts “L'Aigle de Nice”, Cassule has forged a remarkable international career in the field of African visual arts.

His practice is grounded in extensive research, archival memory, and a commitment to cultural diversity and inclusion. Each artwork emerges from deep historical contextualization — reflecting on people, places, events, and spiritual moments across the African and global experience. His creative process integrates personal memory, collective imagination, and aesthetic inquiries into African heritage and the universality of human expression.

Over the past three decades, Cassule has participated in over 60 exhibitions worldwide, including China, Japan, South Korea, France, Italy, Portugal, the USA, Cape Verde, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. He was featured in two editions of the Luanda Triennial (2007, 2010) and twice in the prestigious Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art (2009, 2011). His work has earned multiple accolades, including the 2019 National Culture and Arts Award in Angola and the French Merit and Dedication Award from the International Grand Prix of Plastic Arts (L'Aigle de Nice, 2017).

Cassule’s paintings and installations explore the dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity, cultural hybridity, and African spiritual consciousness. His artistic research is not only a celebration of identity but also a call to action — to see, feel, and reimagine the world through African lenses.

Currently completing his degree in Visual Arts at ISART – Instituto Superior de Artes, Luanda, Sebastião Cassule continues to influence a new generation of African artists through both his artistic production and cultural thought leadership.
