The "Afro-Renaissance" refers to the cultural, intellectual and artistic renaissance in communities of African descent around the world, which seeks not only to rediscover African cultural roots but also to affirm the present and shape a vision for the future. This movement aims to build a fairer, more inclusive and equal society for all people, regardless of their ethnic or racial origin and, at the same time, to revitalise and celebrate Africa's cultural heritage by promoting awareness and appreciation of the history, identity and contributions of people of African and people of African descent to global society.
Housed on a site with a history dating back to the 15th century, Quinta da Fidalga is a setting that in itself tells a story of wealth and preservation. Its agricultural and leisure roots combine with Afro Renaissance's mission to honour and revitalise cultural heritage. The site stands out for its historic orchards, unique hydraulic architecture and a chapel adorned with 18th century tiles, which provides the ideal setting for the narratives explored in the works on display.history and our resilient people.
The pieces on display confront the viewer with pressing contemporary themes, from migration and colonisation to social and political issues, thus reflecting the experience and impact of the African continent in the global context.
