Azeez Salami

Azeez Salami is a Nigerian visual artist from the vibrant city of Lagos, whose practice captures the intensity, rhythm, and layered complexity of his environment. Known for his versatility across mediums and his commitment to exploring the visual language of life itself, Salami is part of a new generation of emerging African artists pushing the boundaries of expression and form.

His formal education in fine art began at Yaba College of Technology, where he earned a National Diploma, establishing a strong technical foundation. Alongside his studies, he was mentored by acclaimed Nigerian painter Damilola Opedun, who helped shape his approach to colour, composition, and storytelling.

Currently pursuing a degree in Visual Arts at the University of Lagos, Salami is deepening his understanding of the relationship between art, society, and cultural memory. This academic journey complements his creative exploration, allowing him to evolve both conceptually and practically as an artist.

Salami’s work is characterised by its experimental use of media, bold compositions, and emotive force. Whether working in oil, acrylic, mixed media, or collage, he consistently channels the spirit of his urban surroundings — reflecting themes of identity, transformation, and coexistence. His pieces offer more than just aesthetic value; they are visual meditations on the pulse of Lagos, and by extension, on the contemporary African condition.

His works have been exhibited widely, both in Nigeria and internationally, and are gaining recognition for their originality and cultural relevance.
