Mixed Media and Architectural Art by Treasure Mlima

Contemporary South African Art and Memory

Fine Art Collectors and African Emerging Artists

"Treasure Mlima’s practice explores the fluidity of Black identity through a unique fusion of minimalism, expressionism, and surreal figuration. Working primarily with wood, he carves human forms that appear to be in flux — evolving, performing, and open to interpretation.

For Mlima, the body becomes a vessel for introspection and transformation. His layered process — combining digital collage, sketching, and carving — reflects a deep sensitivity to time, texture, and spatial presence. His works invite contemplation, occupying a space where identity is not defined, but continually unfolding.

Treasure Mlima

Treasure Mlima is a self-taught visual artist based in Durban, South Africa, whose multidisciplinary practice draws from personal memory, architectural awareness, and a tactile exploration of materials. Trained in Architectural Draughting at the Academic Institute of Excellence, Mlima's work bridges structural precision with emotional depth, reflecting the complexities of identity and space within a multicultural context.

His distinctive approach to form and materiality has earned him increasing visibility in both local and international exhibitions, including Gordon Gallery (Tel Aviv), Fresh Paint Art Fair, and RMB Latitudes. In 2022, he was a finalist for the Cassirer Welz Award, further cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s promising emerging voices in contemporary art.

Blending intuitive process with formal design elements, Mlima’s compositions often feel architectural yet intimate, offering layered reflections on memory, place, and transformation. His works are now held in several private and institutional collections, contributing to the evolving landscape of African visual storytelling.
