Painting, Visual Storytelling and Contemporary Portraiture by Delman Matola

African Visual Narratives, Identity and Symbolism

Fine Art Painting Collectors and Emerging South African Artists

"Delman’s work examines the psychology of becoming, using the figure to explore memory, thought, and emotional interiority. Blue—appearing as skin, shadow, or atmosphere—anchors his compositions, conveying resilience, longing, and the unspoken self. Working primarily in acrylic, he builds immersive, introspective environments. Situated within contemporary African expressionism, his practice advances emotional storytelling through colour, form, and symbolism."

Delman Matola

Delman is a Botswana-born, Malawian artist based in Cape Town whose self-taught practice fuses figurative painting with psychological and diasporic narratives. Known for his signature use of blue as an emotional register, he renders interior states—memory, resilience, and longing—through symbolic realism and expressive distortion. His work has been featured on Latitudes South Africa and exhibited at Camps Bay Gallery, with pieces held in collections across Africa, Europe, and the United States. Delman’s practice continues to explore personal history within a contemporary African futurist framework.
