About The Artwork

This work explores the tragedy of children caught in armed conflict. A child holding the hand of a deceased mother evokes a final bond - a fragile trace of love and safety in a shattered world. The child's gaze, filled with innocence and grief, reflects the deep psychological toll of war.

A stuffed toy beside them becomes a symbol of longing - a quiet attempt to grasp normalcy amid devastation.

The piece calls for awareness of the extreme vulnerability of children in conflict zones, urging empathy and collective action to end their suffering.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marc Makalu

Marc Makalu Ndombasi is a visual artist from Kinshasa, DR Congo, where he lives and works. Inspired by comic books from a young age, his passion for art led him to study at the Institut des Beaux-Arts and the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Kinshasa, specializing in painting.

His work blends realism with quiet introspection, portraying intimate yet universal moments. With a refined technique and muted palette, Marc explores themes like memory, presence, and social injustice - including child labor, resource exploitation, and silenced voices across Africa.

Through subtle gestures and symbolic detail, his paintings reflect the emotional and political layers of everyday life.
