From the "Babu & Cassiano" collection.

After an artistic residency at the Casa das Artes in Coimbra, BABU developed a series of works that make reference to Cassiano Branco (1897 - 1970), an architect who profoundly marked the 20th century in Portugal. In this exhibition, BABU interconnects his lifelong interests, linking Memory and Identity (emphasised in the project he has developed between Africa and Europe, called ACERTO!), affirming the freedom to intervene on the utopian dimensions always present in artists who transcend their time, opening a window of DIALOGUE with artists who motivate him to question himself and try to understand his own time.

An artist, like an architect, is an agent for transforming the world around us, and BABU emphasises this idea, aware of the complexity of the time in which Cassiano lived and the difficulties he experienced in developing his projects, which led him to take on conflicts, abandon projects and be referred to as a troublesome figure for the regime due to his support for Norton de Matos in the 40s and Humberto Delgado in the 50s - Filipe Ribeiro.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Babu

Hamilton Francisco, or simply Babu, was born in Malanje, Angola. From an early age he had a passion for painting. He works with different visual forms. He has taken part in several solo and group exhibitions, as well as artistic residencies in various countries. His work can be found in public and private collections in Angola and abroad, such as the Millenium Atlantico Foundation, CLC Arquitectos, Presidente Meridien Luanda, the Jean Clode de Almeida collection.
